World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is celebrated every year from 1 to 7 August to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies globally. It commemorates the Innocenti Declaration signed in August 1990 by government policymakers, WHO, UNICEF, and other organizations to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding.
The World Breastfeeding Week has annual themes including healthcare systems, women and work, the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes, community support, ecology, economy, science, education, and human rights.
The World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics emphasize the value of breastfeeding for mothers as well as children. Both recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the initial 6 months of life and then supplemented breastfeeding for at least 1 year and up to 2 years or more.
