Let’s face it civics study was boring in school. It won’t be surprising if you ever bunked that. But why did we found the chapters boring or rather confusing? Maybe time to think about that. My take on “The Constitution of India for Children by Subhadra Sen Gupta”

While growing up many adults were and still are confused about the facts and history of our constitution. Author Subhadra Sen Gupta has beautifully simplified the need, importance, and functionality of the longest written constitution in the world.

The book is divided into 7 chapters and some interesting facts. It also contains an extract of the famous speech by Nehru, “Tryst with Destiny”. One that is often tampered and misinterpreted.

While there exists a puzzlement on the need for the constitution, the book covers why and how it came into existence. It conveys how the political, economic and social scenario of India were evaluated while structuring the document. Further, the complexity of preamble is simplified for children and readers of all ages. The keywords in the preamble are described and the amendments are justified.

Additionally, it showcases the valiant efforts of our leaders, men, and women together, unsung voices and the drafting committee.

The text is complemented with smart yet simple analogies.

The sharp and witty illustrations by Tapas Guha brings charm to the straight forward words.

A must-read for all. A reference book that deserves appreciation in every bookshelf for children of India.

Recommended for kids aged 10+ years.

Rating *****/5.
